Founded in 1498, the Vienna Boys’ Choir is one of the oldest and most important cultural institutions in Austria. The “Society of the Vienna Boys’ Choir” has been in existence for 50 years and provides its legal framework. During the past few years, a number of innovations have been made. A generous sponsor, whose contribution, together with equal contributions from the City of Vienna and the Federal Republic of Austria, has made it possible to refurbish and modernize the living quarters and the school building. There is no doubt that winds of change are blowing through this venerable institution. This atmosphere of change brought about the idea to establish the Friends of the Vienna Boys’ Choir as a means to rally external support for the Vienna Boys’ Choir.
The purpose of the 2003 established Friends of the Vienna Boys’ Choir is to support the Choir in material and non-material ways. This includes support for musical education – true to the motto that the quality can’t be high enough. This also includes grants to help highly talented boys from socially disadvantaged families.
Goals of the Friends of the Vienna Boys’ Choir:
● To attract members from home and abroad;
● To support the Vienna Boys’ Choir both in a non-material way and financially;
● To support teaching and voice training: and
● To foster the prestige of the Vienna Boys’ Choir.
